photo Pianist Anthony Tobin in Brazil with the Summer Eurythmy Academy

The Austin Eurythmy Ensemble sponsored a summer eurythmy academy for 5 college students who wanted to study and perform. In addition to giving a lecture about music, painting, and eurythmy, I helped the students prepare their pieces and performed with them in Austin and Brazil. After we performed in Austin we traveled to Sao Paulo, Brazil where the students studied with Marilia Barreto and learned about the Brazilian culture. We saw her special group Terra Brasilis perform and also performed for the students of the Escola Rudolph Steiner and the general public. Repertoire included the Ginastera Argentine Dances, the Ravel Sonatine, and Rachmaninoff Preludes.

The Brazilian group and our group from Austin participated in a cultural and artistic exchange and learned a great deal about the differences in artistic style. We also had a wonderful time exploring Sao Paulo, the third largest city in the world. We hope to have another exchange in the future and return to perform in South America.

The Stage had room for Eurythmy but only an upright Bechstein piano. The audience was so warm and open that it was possible to deliver a very satisfying performance nonetheless. The photo on the right shows one of the rehearsal rooms for eurythmy. The photo on the left shows me hiking in the mountains with the city of Sao Paulo stretching forever behind me.
