Anthony Tobin has performed across the US, Canada, The Netherlands, and in Brazil, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK. He tours as soloist, chamber musician, and as a pianist for eurythmy, an art form that combines dance, music, poetry, and lights. During 2008 Tobin toured Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands with the Austin Eurythmy Ensemble and will return to Germany to perform with them in May 2008 and for a US East and West Coast tour Fall 2008. During May 2008 Tobin will perform in a 4 city tour of the Netherlands with violinist Christian Hoefer. Tobin is heard playing Beethoven piano sonatas for the feature film "The Quiet", directed by Jamie Babbit. In addition to recording in film composer Jeff Rona's Santa Monica studio, Tobin worked daily for three weeks with actresses Camilla Belle and Elisha Cuthbert as Piano Coach and Technical Advisor. Tobin is heard playing part of Beethoven's Sonata Opus 49#1 in g minor in the theatrical trailer for "The Quiet". Read Chris Garcia's 7.19.2006 discussion of Tobin's work on "The Quiet" in the Austin Movie Blog. Anthony Tobin graduated from Ithaca High School in New York. He was a scholarship student at Tanglewood with Anthony di Bonaventura, studied piano with Malcolm Bilson at Cornell University, and won the Junior Baldwin Piano Competition. Tobin received a Bachelor of Music with Distinction from the Eastman School of Music with Anton Nel and played with the Eastman Wind Orchestra. He earned a Master of Music from the University of Southern California where he served as Daniel Pollack's teaching assistant, studied piano pedagogy with Marienne Uszler, and was inducted into the music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda. He received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano from the University of Texas at Austin where he studied piano with Greg Allen, piano pedagogy with Martha Hilley, and completed a dissertation with Elliott Antokoletz that explores abstract pitch relations in Debussy piano preludes. In addition to maintaining a private studio of all ages in Austin, Texas, Tobin has taught at the University of Southern California, the University of Texas, Laredo Community College, at Kirby Hall School, and for the motion picture industry. Since the sense of place and the visual and kinetic qualities of different regions of the world inspire Tobin's art, he is experimenting with photographs and Mini-DV video. Tobin is creating video art that combines mosaic, superimposed, and footage that features different aspects of motion, with improvised music. The goal is to create art that reexamines the nature of motion, music, and timeline. During 2006 and 2007 Tobin travelled to Japan, France and Switzerland to capture video images. The current film projects are docmentaries on Claude Debussy's piano music and the contrast between "old and new" in Tokyo.
